Most of what you pay a name brand has nothing to do with the thing you are buying. Here is our arithmetic, with nothing rounded in our favour.
What we actually are
Dupe Outdoors is a small independent shop. We don't own a factory and we don't pretend to. We source outdoor gear from the same kind of overseas manufacturers that supply a large share of the outdoor market, and we sell it without a brand premium stacked on top.
That's the entire model. There's no clever part.
Where your money goes
Here's a real product from this store, broken down to the cent. This is the headlamp, not a hypothetical.
Shipping is the biggest single line on most of what we sell. It's also why a $2.53 headlamp can't be a $5 headlamp — the freight costs four times the product.
What you're not paying for
- No athlete or ambassador contracts
- No influencer seeding budget
- No retail shelf placement fees
- No logo licensing
- No physical stores to keep the lights on in
A name brand's price carries all of that before it carries any product. Ours doesn't, which is most of the difference you see.
What we don't do
Plenty of stores like this one invent a quality-control story. We'd rather just tell you where the edges are.
- We don't run a lab. We don't disassemble competitor products or commission independent testing. Anyone in this category telling you they do is almost certainly making it up.
- We don't invent MSRPs. There are no crossed-out fake "was" prices anywhere on this site. When we compare against a name brand, we name the exact product and cite where the price came from.
- We're not claiming these are the same product. They're comparable gear at comparable specs. Where the name brand is genuinely better at something, we say so on the comparison.
- Shipping takes 2–10 business days. It ships from the manufacturer, not a warehouse down the road. If you need something this weekend, buy it locally — we'd rather tell you that than take the order.
